Buying an intermediate / step up flute. Advice from The Balanced Scale

Buying a flute, advice from The Balanced Scale

Step Up / Intermediate Flute

Your biggest consideration in the purchase of a new/used flute is your budget. One might expect to spend between $1500.00 and $5000.00 for a step up / intermediate flute. While there are some cost savings associated with buying a used flute, there is also a certain amount of risk involved. A used flute will most likely need to be adjusted and balanced for your personal touch.

Some brand names to look for

Generally brand name instruments are your best choice: Altus 1007, Yamaha 500, Pearl Quantz, Sankyo, Muramatsu EX, GX and AD, Powell Signature, and Miyazawa 401 to name a few.

Features of a Step Up/Intermediate Flute:

Body tube

The body tube may be made of brass with silver plating, nickel silver or varying grades of silver. You also have the option of choosing the “wall” thickness of the body tube. The different materials and construction provide different tonal characteristics.

Toneholes

Toneholes may be “drawn” and “rolled” from the body tube, or they can be soldered on. There is much debate as to the difference in sound between the two.

Keys

“Y” keys and pointed, or French keys, are available as options on some step up flutes. “Y” keys connect to the key mechanism or arm at the rear of the key cup, focusing finger pressure on the back of the pad.

The pointed or French arms connect to the key mechanism at the center of the key cup, focusing the finger pressure directly on the center of the pad. Other key features may include split E mechanism, inline/offset G, and “Gizmo” key for low B.

The key on the left is pointed (french),abd the key on the right is a Y key; notice where they connect to the cup.

Key regulation

Regulation of the key mechanism on entry/student/intermediate model flutes is accomplished through the use of adjustment screws. Some screws are visible from the front view and others are set behind the keys.

Some stepup/intermediate flutes have Plateau (closed) style keys, however, the French (open) keys are used by the majority of professional players because they force proper technique and the open holes make it easier to produce tonal nuances.

Case

Finally, a sturdy case that fits the contour of the flute is essential to ensure that your new companion remains safe and snug. Always store your swab and wiping cloth in an external “case cover”. This will ensure extra lint and moisture will not accumulate in and on your flute. Case covers are often padded for that “extra” level of security just in “case”.

I hope this was helpfull, if you have any questions, comments, queries or would like to suggest something please contribute below.

Advanced Terran Scouting Techniques

Successful scouting in Starcraft 2 is the key to victory.  Spying on your opponent enables you to discover what kind of units and buildings he is creating, their location, and their quantity.  This will enable you to anticipate his game strategy and counter with a winning strategy of yours.

The Protoss and Zerg races in Starcraft 2 are missing a scouting skill that the Terran race has – the Terran’s have the skill to scout their opponent without using any of their units.  With the use of Scanner Sweep, Terran’s can scout a big portion of the map and reveal any buildings or troops in that area – even hidden ones.  Terran’s can use this capability at any time and on any area of the map.

This doesn’t mean you should only use Scanner Sweep as a Terran – make sure to use troops and your buildings to scout as well.  SCV units, Reapers, Vikings and Hellions can all make excellent scouts at certain times within the battle.  For a great resource that has a lot more information, check out the Shokz Guide review for Starcraft 2.

Early Game Terran Scouting Secrets
The SCV Unit that built and completed your initial Supply Depot is a prime unit to scout with.  SCV units 12 or 13 are also good units to scout with, depending on the type of game you’re playing.  You should begin scouting sooner when playing against a random race or when using the 4 player map.

If you’re battling against Protoss and they have tons of units but not many Pylons, there are probably more of them that you haven’t found yet.  Your opponent has probably built some tech buildings and Pylons in remote areas on the map.  When battling against the Protoss, make certain to remember that if you discover a Forge, a Cannon Rush or Void Ray strategy is what you should prepare for.  Start to prepare for a Zealot Rush or Robotics Bay if your scouting unveils two Gateways.

When confronting a Zerg opponent, you should anticipate a 6-8 Zergling cheese attack if you uncover a Spawning Pool.  Hatcheries are signs that the Zerg competitor may be spawning Mutalisks, Hydras, or a massive Roach attack.  You can find additional strategies and tips by reading the Shokz Guide Download for Starcraft 2.

Mid-Game Terran Scouting Secrets
In the middle of the game, it’s possible to use your buildings as well as to your units to scout your enemy.  One of the mid-game strategies is to use your Factory or Barrack buildings to fly over several areas of the map.  If you do this, you can find out where, how many, and which types of buildings and troops you are up against.  In addition to using buildings to scout, at this point in the game you should also begin to use some other types of units besides SCVs to scout with.

- Hellions are fast units and can do large amounts of damage when facing light units.  Cheaper than a Reaper.
- Reapers are also quick and can leap off of cliffs.
- Vikings can fly above the competitor and are terrific for scouting and harassing your foe.

Terran’s are excellent at turtling and really defending themselves, which is an easy way for them to block most enemy scouting units.  Using three supply depots, two depots and a barrack, or a barrack and factory to wall in are simple ways to do this.

Build up your Chess Pieces without delay:

Build up your Chess Pieces without delay:
In the chess opening you need to develop each and every chess pieces not only the pawns to effectual squares as fast as probable. Those effectual squares must have power over the center, help out preserve the center, and help attack or protect the position. Losing a pace or a useful move might cost you time, room on the board, mobility, or the chess game!

Chess Pieces: The participant whose chess pieces are developed more rapidly will typically have power over the path of the game. The most excellent way to stay away from an opening entrap is to build up your chess pieces to helpful squares as soon as probable. Acquire the Knights and Bishops not at home, and then castle to guard the King. Developing your chess pieces rapidly also might help out get in the way with the growth of your challenger pieces. If you comprise the White chess pieces, build up your pieces rapidly and be antagonistic. You are supposed to have the benefit with the initial move. If you have the Black pieces, you are playing self-protective if not White gets behind in improvement; still, you build up your own pieces rapidly, looking for and harass or creating a well-built defense.

  • Develop your pieces to sensible position, particularly if you are not well-known with your challenger opening or protection. Position your pawns in the middle promptly to let go your other pieces and hold back your opponent’s pawn and piece growth.
  • Develop fast towards the middle to defend and attack the middle squares. Develop a piece with a danger when likely that your challenger should try to protect.
  • Develop your pieces earliest on the area where you have it in mind to castle. That is more often than not the Kingside. Once you have gotten your Knights and Bishops away from home (the small pieces), you may possibly wish for to castle, after that position a Rook on an open file if probable. Last but not least develop your Queen, but not also in the early hours and not too far-off from the defense of your pieces.
  • Develop your Bishops, Rooks, and Queen to intimidate more far-away goals. Attempt to move about each piece once in the opening so as not to squander time (tempo) or parting other pieces not fully formed.
